Gallery reFramed

Gallery reFramed - a collaborative work with currently incarcerated artists - a REcurated and REimagined Neoclassical and Late Baroque museum gallery in miniature.

Three experiences directed my artwork towards the injustices of mass incarceration:
During my undergraduate architectural studies, we were given a choice of designing a monastery or a prison…both being based on isolation, but in drastically different ways.

Years later I came across a newspaper article about the loneliness of prisoners and becoming a pen pal.

Third, I came across the book Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration! One of the highlighted artists was Dean Gillispie, a miniaturist! It was like the world was telling me; it’s TIME for me to do something with the tools that I have, so to speak.

I invited artists, who are currently incarcerated, to reimagine the paintings and sculptures of a full sized museum… to show the outside world that these people are more than the crime they are charged with and to understand more about them - their past lives, their dreams, their choices … and maybe others could find empathy now knowing about the bloated carceral system of the United States.
